Today we bring you some exciting news about an expansion to our facilities here at Unusual Projects!
We are now home to SLA & FDM 3D printers giving us the ability to produce highly accurate prototypes, models and functional components in any form imaginable, from a wide variety of materials.
Our FDM printer, the Ultimaker S5, makes parts by extruding layers of plastic. The parts are tough and durable, but usually lower resolution or quality. It can print in multiple colours and also in a variety of different materials (such as; ABS/ PLA/ PETG/ TPU).
Our SLA printer, the Form 3, uses a laser beam to selectively cure a photopolymer resin in a vat. The parts produced are high resolution and very detailed, but they are also usually quite brittle. You can print in a variety of different colours and materials (including clear!)
Having these two machines expands our offering and gives our clients more options for the manufacture of their unusual projects, there are lots of benefits to heritage and museum exhibitions including;
- Rapid and affordable prototyping
- Solid, robust and lightweight parts
- Environmentally friendly
- Print on demand
- Quality and consistency
- Perceptible design and product testing
- Unlimited Geometry and shapes
One of our favourite things about 3D printing is the quick turnaround. Although many of our projects still require the handcrafted skills of our model and prop makers, 3D printing can be used on certain elements that can help turn a finished product around in hours and days, rather than weeks and months.
We spoke to our Development Director, Carol, about what this means for our clients, “Our 3D printers complement our existing traditional model and prop making services by enabling us to speed up our processes and create multiple components much more cost effectively, we can also create some of the many bespoke elements of our complex physical interactives as well as enabling swifter and more economical testing of concepts and prototyping of designs.”
