This job is basically an extension of my own hobbies, plus I get to work on some of the best projects out there just to top it off.
It sounds a bit cliché but working at Unusual Projects is by far the best place I have worked since starting my career after university. It has combined my interest of building creations at home in my workshop with my passion for product design and problem solving, making being an Interactive Designer my ideal job.
I have been part of the UP team since December 2020 and the range of projects I have been involved with has been really impressive; from highly prestigious exhibits to much more low key interactives, which equally require a lot of head scratching to find the right solution. I love working as a designer to create concepts and developing them into fully manufacturable products.
Our team has a lot of clever minds so being able to collaborate with them is fantastic. Not only has it boosted my development as a designer but the type of interactives we get to make is like nothing I could have imagined. I also can take time away from design work to get stuck in within the workshop. Learning from very experienced interactive builders, I get to work on the CNC machine, lathes, 3D printers or do some joinery all within one day.
I had secretly hoped when I joined as an Interactive Designer, that I could develop my role to split between designing on a screen with machining, fabricating and building those same parts alongside the team in the workshop. This has been achievable because the opportunities within my job role are genuinely unlimited. I can guarantee that everyday will be really enjoyable regardless of the hard work and challenges along the way. This job is basically an extension of my own hobbies, plus I get to work on some of the best projects out there just to top it off.
