The Philip Astley Project

Philip Astley centre

Client: Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council

Scope: fit out

We completed a highly themed fit-out project for the new Philip Astley Visitor Centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Philip Astley (1742 – 1814) is regarded as the “Father of the modern circus”; an experienced Equestrian who served in the Fifteen Light Dragoons fighting in the 7 year war. The iconic red ringmaster costume, still worn today, is based on Astley’s army uniform which he wore when he owned the very first London circus: ‘Astley’s Amphitheater of Equestrian Arts’ .

Everything in the new Centre is Astley, Circus, Fairground and entertainment themed with brass barley twist poles, a children’s dressing up space and bendy mirrors, all covered by a fabric circus tent festooned with lights. We loved every moment of this fast paced project and hope it continues Philip Astley’s legacy of entertainment for many years to come.

It has been wonderful working with like minded people on this exciting project who recognised the vision and helped realise the dream.
