school of health & wellbeing

Client: the university of glasgow

Scope: Interactives

The University of Glasgow has brought together all departments within the School of Health and Wellbeing under one roof in a new purpose-built facility. An opportunity was identified for an engaging public space within the ground floor of the new facility to illustrate their aim of ‘improving population health and wellbeing and reducing inequalities in health’. Open to all, the space works to raise awareness of the SHW research on how inequalities can impact the health and wellbeing of those affected.

Working collaboratively with Glasgow Science Centre and Joi Polloi, our scope was to design develop the concepts into finished exhibits, building and installing seven exhibits with a mix of complex setworks elements, cast resin models, electro-mechanical interactives and AV based interactives produced by Joi Polloi.

A large canopy setworks structure acts as a focus point to the area and integrates a number of interactive elements, lighting and graphic content to welcome and introduce visitors into the space. The remaining exhibits are installed throughout the ground floor with a mix of setworks units, electro-mechanical interactive elements and integrated AV hardware with bespoke software. One exhibit has a set of coloured cast piggy banks with integrated LED lit eyes and a button in place of a money slot. These were designed, cast and molded at Unusual Projects using colour matched resin for robustness and to fit within the clients key colours and integrated to work with the bespoke software developed by Joi Polloi.

The team at Unusual Projects thoroughly enjoyed working with the team at GSC and Joi Polloi and to produce these exhibits and welcomed the challenge to design, build and install such a complex setworks structure into an existing space.

Unusual Projects are a safe pair of hands that allow us to focus on what’s most important. This was particularly useful during this project which was part of a much bigger building and campus redevelopment at the University of the Glasgow. The quality of Unusual Projects’ work from design to installation shines through, helping to create a unique space where the local community can engage with vital academic work on health and inequalities
