stories of wonder

Client: holkham estate

Scope: Interactives

It's been a very personal project for us to work alongside Drinkall Dean, Playne Design and the team at Holkham Hall to update the Holkham Stories exhibition, including 'Stories of WONDER', as part of Holkham’s sustainability and conservation strategy, and its goal to become a carbon neutral estate by 2040.

'Stories of WONDER' encompasses three goals:

  • championing low carbon living

  • increasing natural capital

  • stamping out waste

We created a series of interactive displays to bring these goals to life. The team wanted to make the subject of carbon more accessible, so the team created a model of the estate showing emissions, and a beautiful tactile woven graph to represent projects reducing these. This graph can be updated in line with progress. With sustainability being the key focus for this new exhibition, all the materials used were chosen very carefully. We produced panels from OSB (recycled wood bonded with heat) with graphics printed directly onto the surface. The end result makes a sometimes complex subject accessible, inspiring for visitors (and it also looks great!).

It was great to work with Unusual projects – it was a challenging brief to bring WONDER to life in a relatively small space. We’re really pleased with the interactive elements, particularly the natural capital cubes, which give such a visual before and after message whilst also providing a higher level of detail to visitors who are interested. All the interactives are excellent quality and the whole space is modern, engaging and vibrant. Thanks to Jon and the team for working so closely with us.
