the adani green gallery

energy revolution

Client: science museum

Scope: interactives

The new Energy Revolution: The Adani Green Energy Gallery is now open at the Science Museum in London where visitors can discover how the world can generate and use more sustainably to urgently decarbonise and limit climate change in this free new gallery. We were approached by the museum to work on several models as part of this exciting new space.

Our brief was to design and develop five interactive exhibits, from sustainable and recyclable materials, highlighting how to achieve a low carbon world.

Retrofit house is a scale model, featuring how home must “retrofit” the existing building stock to make them more energy efficient. When buttons are pressed, activates illuminate carbon efficient technology which can be added to existing homes.

Our skilled team of model makers used multi machine processes to ensure the brick carcass was level throughout the whole exterior of the model. We also designed ten 3D-printed representations of items and systems that can improve the efficiency of an existing property. These interventions were LED illuminated, and operated via push buttons with text to explain the improvement.

Bright box is a scale model of a solar powered classroom refurbished from a shipping container. This is placed in the grounds of an existing school in Uganda and provides learning equipment and a generation hub for the school’s power in other areas. The model is split into three layers and suspended within the gallery. The detailed model shows each induvial innovation, from solar panels, laptops, and tablets to water catchment for the school.

Gravitricity is an interactive exhibit that highlights how electricity can be stored efficiently in different ways and not necessarily just in batteries. Turning the exhibit handwheel illuminates a chasing stream of LEDs showing surplus energy flowing from renewable sources, in this case wind turbines shown in our graphic, and slowly raises the weight inside the model. Once at the top pushing the button allows the weight to descend within the shaft, and a second stream of chasing LEDs illuminates showing stored energy flowing out into the houses and illuminating their windows.

Orkney Wind Farm exhibit is a made up of a series of recycled Science Museum metal shelving panels that are held together in a timber frame to represent a section of sea and hilly land in the Orkney Isles. We masked the metal panels to spray the blue sea and coloured lines representing lines power connection, before installing laser cut steel wind turbines and a hydrogen fuel depot.

Energy tracker displays historic carbon usage by year as per statistics provided by the UK government. The 25 clear tubes, with laser engraved increments, represent the years from 2010 to 2035 and are housed in a powder coated metal frame, a birch plywood base, and with LED ribbon lighting illuminating the tubes. Each tube will be filled with coloured sand to represent that year’s carbon usage. The top access panel allows tube filling in future years.
